Receive replies at your custom domain

On this page

Spark can send email from an address at your own domain, such as hello@mybakery.com.

Setting up that address doesn’t create an inbox. To receive and read replies at hello@mybakery.com, you also need an inbox for that address from an email provider, or forwarding to an inbox you already use.

Sending and receiving are separate

After you set up an address at your domain in Spark:

  • Spark can send emails that come from hello@mybakery.com.
  • Replies go to the address you choose in Replies go to.
  • hello@mybakery.com receives email only if it has an inbox with an email provider, or forwarding set up with your domain provider.

Your sending address and your reply address don’t have to match. For example, you can send from hello@mybakery.com while replies go to maya@example.com.

Do I already have an inbox?

You may already have one if you use your domain for email today.

If you can sign in to an email service and read messages sent to an address like hello@mybakery.com, that address has an inbox. You can use it as your reply address in Spark.

If you only bought the domain or connected it to Spark, you probably don’t have an inbox yet.

How do I get an inbox?

Choose an email provider that supports email at your own domain, then create the address you want to use. Common options include Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Fastmail, Zoho Mail, and the email services some domain providers offer. Spark doesn’t require a specific provider.

Your email provider guides you through setting up the inbox and any DNS changes it needs.

Forward email to an inbox you already use

If you’d rather not set up a new inbox, you can forward email instead. Forwarding sends email that arrives at hello@mybakery.com on to an inbox you already have, such as maya@example.com.

Forwarding is a setting at your domain provider, which is usually the company you bought the domain from. Many domain providers offer it, and some include it with the domain. Look for email forwarding in your domain’s settings there, or search your provider’s help for “email forwarding”.

When you answer a forwarded email, your answer comes from the inbox you’re using, such as maya@example.com.

Send replies to your inbox

First, send a test email to the address and check that it arrives.

Then:

  1. Open your project in Spark and go to Project settings → Email.
  2. Next to Replies go to, choose Change.
  3. Choose Another email address and enter the address you created.
  4. Choose Save.
  5. Open the confirmation link Spark sends to that address.

Until you open the link, the address shows Waiting for confirmation and replies keep going where they went before. If the email doesn’t arrive, choose Resend link.

Once the address is confirmed, customer replies go to that inbox.

Don’t need a new inbox?

You can keep replies going to an email address you already use.

Spark can also save replies in your project for an internal tool to show, or you can choose not to accept replies. See Where replies go.
